1996 Sundance Film Festival Winners

The Sundance Film Festival has long been a launching pad for independent cinema, documentaries, and innovative storytelling. The 1996 Sundance Film Festival was no exception, showcasing a diverse range of films that captured the attention of audiences and critics alike.

The Festival screened many films to sold-out crowds. The Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention, and alumni filmmakers.

Award winners included Wendell B. Blacktop Lingo, at the 1996 Festival.

In the shorts program, filmmakers Trey Parker and Matt Stone screened The Spirit of Christmas after a bootleg version of the film had previously circulated.

The history of the Sundance Film Festival

Notable films and events from the festival included:

  • Screening films such as To Sleep with Anger, Trust, Delicatessen, and Strawberry and Chocolate.
  • Presenting programs devoted to the personal documentary genre and animation.

The Festival opened with a restoration of F.W. Murnau’s True Love. It presented programs devoted to the personal documentary genre and animation. The Festival screened many films to sold-out crowds.

The Dramatic Directing Award went to first-time feature director Radha Blank, who also wrote, starred, and rapped in The 40-Year-Old Version.
